A bad shipping label usually gets discovered weeks later, in a yard, by someone who can’t scan it. This concept moves that discovery to the printer.

Two Loops

  • Verify at the moment of print: a camera or scan engine reads back what was just printed and encoded, grades it, and refuses to release a label that fails
  • Predict what fails next: a model over printer telemetry forecasts printhead wear and supplies, and, given where the label is headed (outdoor yard or indoor tote), how long it will stay readable. The output is a relabel task sent to a handheld before the label goes dark.

Status

An accepted entry for an internal Zebra innovation expo. The deliverable is a software simulator and a recorded demo rather than a hardware rig, which is a relief for everyone’s shipping budget.
