whichtool.dev

A free decision matrix of 269 tools across AI, PKM, coding, and productivity — pick the right tool for the job.

Next.js 16 · React 19 · TypeScript · Tailwind CSS 4 · Vercel Live ↗

whichtool.dev is a curated decision matrix built from five years of personal notes on 200+ apps and tools. Click a scenario like “I need to write code with AI help,” and get a recommendation with pros, cons, and an opinionated verdict.

I’ve tested over 200 tools for thought, AI apps, and productivity tools — a weird little hobby that produced a genuinely useful reference. The friction of remembering which tool fits which scenario is what turned the private notes into a public site.

Features

  • Scenario-based filtering — start from what you’re trying to do, not from a product list
  • Category browsing — 32 categories from AI Models to CLI Tools
  • Full-text search — across names, descriptions, pros, and cons
  • Cards and table views with platform badges (Web, Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, Linux)
  • Active-use indicators — see which tools are currently in my own toolkit

Principles

Completely free and available to all. No subscriptions, no ads, no gated content. The data is subjective by design — every verdict comes from actually using the tool.

I wrote about the backstory in Which Tool?, the essay that launched it.
